Fabian Receives Unforgettable Sports Tributes
Like many 14-year-olds, Fabian is a passionate sports fan who loves playing and watching basketball and soccer. But unlike many teens, Fabian was recently diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Fabian’s usual hobbies were sidelined as he went through a round of chemotherapy earlier this year, and he is scheduled for additional therapies, including Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-Cell Therapy and a bone marrow transplant.
While Fabian was entering an unprecedented time in his life, the world was entering its own. Due to COVID-19, the country started shutting down and Fabian experienced several delays with necessary blood transfusions. Seeking to channel the strength of his sports heroes, Fabian wished for autographed jerseys from some of his favorite players and a new iPhone- but he had to be patient while the world’s game was on pause. Once ASW Chicago and Fabian’s family determined the circumstances were safe, his wish was granted.
On May 15th, 2020, ASW Chicago volunteers arrived at Fabian's house and presented him with authentic signed jerseys from NBA stars Stephen Curry and Luka Dončić and international soccer superstar Leo Messi. Fabian also received a new iPhone 11 Pro and MacBook Pro to help him stay connected while being a virtual player.
Fabian’s parents and siblings (Ivan, Alyma, and Mateo) were all home to experience the big reveal together.
Fabian was very thankful for the surprise and plans to hang the iconic jerseys in his bedroom. ASW Chicago’s President, Xavier, says he’s happy they could grant the wish now as an example to “be present in a time where people are virtual.”
Shortly after the volunteers left, they received a text of gratitude from tech-savvy Fabian on his new iPhone:
“Hello this is Fabian and I just want to say thank you very much for this surprise it really put a smile on my face”
