Declan Discovers Disney Magic
In 2010, Declan was born at just 24 weeks- weighing only 1 pound, 14 ounces. Due to Declan’s extreme prematurity, he faced numerous life-threatening conditions and spent six months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit before finally coming home. In Declan's nine short years, he has undergone five brain surgeries and a long list of other surgeries due to his prematurity. He also has profound hearing loss and cerebral palsy.
Despite his challenges, Declan is a sweet, strong, and happy 9-year-old. He loves to be around his friends at school, spend time with his younger sister, and to practice his walking. Declan’s all-time favorite hobby is watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. It came as no surprise that Declan’s wish was to meet Mickey Mouse in-person at Disney World.
ASW Chicago volunteers as well as those at Give Kids the World Village coordinated all aspects of the trip from transportation to lodging and arranged any special accommodations needed for Declan.
We are so thankful we could grant Declan’s wish in February as Disney World temporarily shut down due to COVID-19 just weeks after his visit. On behalf of ASW Chicago, thank you to our volunteers, our friends at Give Kids the World Village, Declan’s family for sharing these moments with us, and our generous supporters for making this wish come true!
